MIMO capacity scaling and saturation in correlated environments

چکیده
The capacity of MIMO systems under ideal (i.i.d.) channel conditions has been shown to increase linearly with the number of antennas. Capacity scaling is observed in a correlated channel environment as well but the constant of scaling is shown in [7] to be less than that of the i.i.d. scaling factor. Using a channel representation motivated by physical scattering considerations, the virtual channel representation, we show this effect does occur provided the number of effective scattering paths keeps asymptotically increasing with the increase in the number of antennas. Otherwise we show that saturation of capacity occurs. Using random banded matrix theory results, we also show that the effect of correlation is to reduce the effective received SNR according to the degree of correlation. This also yields a closed form expression for the asymptotic capacity of correlated MIMO channels.

Role of Channel Power in Sub-linear Capacity Scaling of MIMO Channels
Multi-antenna systems have been shown to offer a linear scaling of capacity under rich scattering conditions [1] [2]. The question of capacity scaling under correlated channel conditions is still not well understood. Earlier results in [3] and [4] which showed linear scaling of capacity under a Kronecker product correlation model and a D-connected model respectively, correspond to a quadratic s...
متن کاملCapacity of Correlated Multi - Input Multi - Output Channels Using the Virtual Channel Representation
The study of capacity of a randomly varying multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel with independent and identically distributed entries by Telatar [7] and Foschini and Gans [8] has led to considerable interest in the question of capacity scaling under realistic channel assumptions. Initial work by Chuah et al. [9] had showed that capacity scaling is possible in correlated channels with a Krone...
متن کاملCapacity scaling and spectral efficiency in wide-band correlated MIMO channels
The dramatic linear increase in ergodic capacity with the number of antennas promised by MIMO wireless communication systems is based on idealized channel models representing a rich scattering environment. Is such scaling sustainable in realistic scattering scenarios? Existing physical models, although realistic, are intractable for addressing this problem analytically due to their complicated ...
متن کاملCapacity scaling in MIMO Wireless systems under correlated fading
Previous studies have shown that single-user systems employing -element antenna arrays at both the transmitter and the receiver can achieve a capacity proportional to , assuming independent Rayleigh fading between antenna pairs. In this paper, we explore the capacity of dual-antenna-array systems under correlated fading via theoretical analysis and ray-tracing simulations. We derive and compare...
متن کاملLow-power dynamic MIMO detection for a 4×4 MIMO-OFDM receiver
This paper describes low-power dynamic multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) detection for a 4×4 MIMO-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) receiver. MIMO-OFDM systems achieve high-speed and large capacity communications. However, they impose high computational cost in MIMO detection when separating spatially multiplexed signals and they consume vast amounts of power. We pr...
